Let's say all consumers will in fact get Windows 10 Home with S Mode on their new computers. Those that weren't going to install any Win32 programs to begin with will not notice any difference or limitation. Those that do attempt to install Win32 (Chrome, etc.) will get a popup about the S Mode restriction, select disable it, and then continue installing the program they wanted. I just don't see how this implementation will encourage users to change their behavior or embrace S mode in any way. It was cheaper than Normal Pro however it was still more expensive than Home.

Windows 10 in S mode is a version of Windows 10 that Microsoft configured to run on lighter devices, provide better security, and enable easier management. The “S” doesn’t have a specific designation, but Microsoft generally surrounds it with words like security, streamlined, superior performance, and whatnot. Windows 10 pro is very far from needed, at all, on high end or gaming machines. There is only a handfull amount of features that are pointless for most users in pro, that are not in home. What you should never see is Windows 10 Home or Pro at 32 bits.
This means hardware makers can now just pick between Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro, and choose whether they want S mode to be enabled by default on the device that it is selling to consumers. In theory, this should make Windows 10 S even more accessible to hardware makers, and make it easier for users to switch between S mode and the "unlocked" version of Windows 10 Home or Pro. Running Windows 10 in S mode is more secure for several reasons. It does not allow unverified applications to be downloaded or used, which minimizes any risk of malware or virus that comes with unverified applications. This also helps reduce the memory usage of the computer.

You're confusing advanced tech knowledge about how Microsoft operates its SKUs vs "marketing". The compilation of the software seems to have literally changed. Upgrading from „Pro S“ to „Pro“ should be free too, otherwise people will still find S a bad idea. Windows 10s is made to compete with Chrome OS. Honestly, I wish Windows 10s would have exsisted long ago.
So this seems to me to simply be a rebranding of a current feature with a bolt-on charge for Pro. Does S mode add anything for the user that the current store-app-only mode doesn't already provide? Since we already have granny mode, I'm struggling to see any benefit.

And, for another measure of security, users don’t have access to use command-line shells such as command prompt. Of course, you’re free to go to Google.com to get your searching done, but if you type a search into the Start Menu or the Edge URL bar, you’ll be directed to Bing and there’s no way to change it. Similarly, Chrome OS is locked to Chrome, but that’s no bad thing, as Chrome is the best web browser around. You’re not locked to Google search either, if you don’t want to be, with Chrome making it easy to change your default search engine. Windows 10 S also locks you to the Bing search engine on Edge by default. We can see why Microsoft has done this; it can curate the results on Bing to keep its users safe, which is all well and good – apart from the fact we don’t really rate Bing for much at all.

The big difference between Windows 10 S and any other version of Windows 10 is that 10 S can only run applications downloaded from the Windows Store. Every other version of Windows 10 has the option to install applications from third-party sites and stores, as has the majority of versions of Windows before it. Windows 10 S is a fully-fledged version of Windows 10 designed for low-cost computers as well as education-oriented PCs and even some premium computers, such as the new Microsoft Surface Laptop. To help prevent accidental data leakage from devices, which can happen when apps are collecting data you’re unaware of, it includes Windows Information Protection .
This helps Microsoft get Windows 10 S out onto more devices, and gives users the chance to upgrade without paying. Microsoft isn't even making it a default option for hardware makers. Instead, it's making S mode cheaper for hardware makers to preload onto new hardware. It isn't forcing hardware makers to use S mode, which means OEM partners like Dell and HP will likely continue to sell versions of their hardware with editions of Windows without S Mode.

Once PWAs take off, this should be almost entirely worthwhile. The only apps that I use regularly which wouldn't be supported in S mode are some steam games and Office 2016. Windows 10 Home or Pro definately works without a Microsoft account.
